Why Uncomfortable Conversations Are Good . . .

Some people lack motivation, and they contact me to ask if I can “motivate” them. Although I do provide motivation for my clients, I’m always a little dubious when people ask this, for a couple of reasons.

#1. Ideally you should be somewhat self motivated, and I can then direct that wonderful energy into the right areas.

#2. I wonder if they can really take it when I let rip with the motivation. What I mean specifically by this is, can they handle their own truth when I remind them of their goals?

My aim is to speaketh only the truth, and, via some very UNCOMFORTABLE conversations I hold these very naughty girls accountable to their goal/s.

For example . . .

On one hand, it’s Monday morning and one of my lovely ladies is moaning (about her lack of progress) so I decided to bring her back to reality with a little truth bomb and point out a few things.

It went something like this:

“Listen, you’re constantly moaning and groaning about things which are all a consequence of your lifestyle. When I ask you what you have eaten over the weekend you just smile and laugh and make light of it, but you told me only a week ago, you hate your tummy and you really want to lose weight and was able to have a weekend off overindulging.

You need to take responsibility for what YOU said you would do.

Would you like to take a break and come back again when you are really ready to change?”

(Enter silence) That would of course have stung a little.

But people don’t pay me their hard earned cash to be their friend and join them in excuse making.

Did it work?

Yes 100%.

And she even thanked me for it. (I’m not so cruel after all!).

And then on the other hand, you have Maria, who last week after a long hard summer of eating, boozing and parenting, sent me this:

“Hi Richard, I have to send you food diaries I’m afraid. Need some control and abuse!”

That’s my girl.

Having uncomfortable conversations is part of my job.

And it’s for your own good.
